All-New X-Men #31 (2014) – Stuart Immonen Cover – Iceman Unleashed

All-New X-Men #31 is an important transition issue in Brian Michael Bendis' run, beginning a new phase of dimension-hopping adventures for the time-displaced original X-Men.

The story opens with a mysterious interdimensional portal in the Ultimate Universe. Tony Stark and Amadeus Cho investigate the phenomenon, only for the portal to suddenly collapse. Back in the main Marvel Universe, Angel and X-23 return to the New Xavier School while the other X-Men are away for the reading of Charles Xavier's will.

Meanwhile, the young X-Men encounter a mysterious new mutant whose uncontrolled powers can tear open portals between realities. The resulting dimensional chaos sets up the team's journey into the Ultimate Universe, eventually bringing them into contact with Miles Morales, the Ultimate Spider-Man, and their alternate counterparts. Marvel later collected #31–41 as All-New X-Men Vol. 4, describing this stretch as the team's dimension-hopping adventure into the Ultimate Universe.

The issue's solicitation emphasizes “ICEMAN UNLEASHED!”, with young Bobby Drake taking the offensive. The cover dramatically visualizes that idea with Iceman surrounded by enormous shards of ice and explosive orange energy.
