War of Kings: Ascension #1 is the first issue of a four-part Marvel limited series and a War of Kings tie-in. The issue is written by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning, with interior pencils by Wellinton Alves, inks by Scott Hanna, colors by Guru eFX, and lettering by Cory Petit. The photographed copy is the Marvel Variant Edition / Cover B, featuring a cover by Paul Pelletier.
The story focuses on Chris Powell, the young hero known as Darkhawk, and the mysterious Talon. It explores the shocking connection between Darkhawk, the Shi'ar, and a larger cosmic secret, eventually leading toward a confrontation involving Annihilus' forces in the Negative Zone.
The cover features Talon in a dramatic blue, black and white armored costume, crouching over a fallen armored figure amid shattered rocks and debris. Talon's helmet has a distinctive pointed design and glowing blue-white eye area, while bright cosmic energy and a star-filled background create a powerful space-fantasy atmosphere. The WAR OF KINGS: ASCENSION title dominates the upper portion of the artwork, with the Marvel Variant Edition box visible at the bottom-left.
